The City of Markesan offers building inspection services to provide a safe living and working environment for City residents and businesses. We contract with General Engineering Co, to provide these services. Our assigned inspector reviews applications and issues permits, does any needed inspections, and assists in administering the City's zoning code.
Building permit applications should be returned to the Markesan City Hall, and can be dropped off during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, 8:00am to 4:00pm. You may also leave applications in the City Hall drop box any time of day.
When Do I Need a Permit?
The City of Markesan requires building permits for many home improvements. The following list is for illustrative purposes, and is not all inclusive:
- Sidewalks
- Roof shingle replacements
- Window/Door Replacements
- Fences
- Signs
- Electrical, plumbing, HVAC installations or improvements
- Accessory buildings (garages, garden sheds, etc.)
- Decks & porches
- Basement remodeling
Some things do not need a permit. They include:
- Flooring replacement
- Painting
- Installation of satellite dishes/TV antennas
- Non-structural updates

Obtaining a Permit
General building permits may be obtained by completing the Building Permit Application.
As a reminder, no work should begin until you have an approved permit. Please direct any questions to your local building inspector.
The link below is a fillable application form, that you can complete, print off and submit to the Clerk/Treasurer's office at City Hall.
Online Permit Application - submit a permit via the online application portal.
Prior to submitting your application, you will need the following information:
- Parcel number
- Zoning permit number
- Sanitary permit number
- Electronic copy of all plans
- Contractor information including license number & expiration date
Follow these steps to apply online:

- Upload plans and other required documentation
- Submit your application for review.
Once your application is submitted:
- The Inspector will review and request more information -or- accept for further processing
- Once accepted, the Inspector will complete a detailed review and follow-up with remaining questions with the goal of approving
- Once approved, you will be notified that your permit is ready and any remaining payment needed
New Homes
If you are building a new One or Two-Family home, a standardized UDC Building Permit Application is required, as well as a variety of other pieces of information.

Permit Fees
Permit fees vary depending on the project.
The Building Inspector must review the application to determine the final fee based on the work being done, the number of inspections required, etc.
