Reason for Announcement:  Applications are now being accepted to fill a full-time “working” Police Chief vacancy with the City.


Position Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:


Plans, organizes, directs and exercises general supervision over the work of the department.


Develops and implements department policies and procedures.


Acts as custodian of the Markesan Police Department and of all City property, equipment and supplies under the control of the Police Department and shall be responsible for the care, maintenance, safeguarding and accurate records of such property, equipment and supplies. The Chief will also act as custodian of all property and evidentiary materials; and for the safekeeping, lawful disposition, accurate record and return of recovered property to its lawful owner.


Maintain accurate records of complaints, crimes, traffic accidents, ordinance violations, arrests, summons, incidents, call for police service and shall provide a system of periodic summary and analysis to ensure the most efficient and effective deployment and use of the department’s resources. The Chief shall also cause to be submitted to various agencies such reports as are required by State Statutes and ordinances; comply with requests for reports or information as may be prescribed by the Common Council; and shall participate in voluntary programs to improve law enforcement and public safety.


Maintains department ethics, morale, and discipline. Provides effective and positive motivation and leadership to Police Department personnel. Is responsible for monitoring and resolving most personnel issues. Recommends new police officer candidates and recommends promotions to the Finance, Personnel & Safety Committee.


Makes up duty schedules, which makes allowances for variation in shifts and in days of the week worked. Authorize overtime work for police officers, with supporting justification provided to the Finance, Personnel and Safety Committee.


Plans, organizes, schedules, assigns and evaluates work of the department members. Delegates special assignments or duties to police officers, and monitors to see that responsibilities are carried out.


Performs all duties of a police officer during shift hours. Works as a police officer periodically on other shifts and on different days. Has on-call duties as required.

Salary range:  $75,000 to $90,000 depending on education, experience and qualifications

Qualifications

Minimum of ten (10) years of progressively responsible law enforcement experience, including at least five (5) years in a supervisory role that includes administrative experience. 

Demonstrated leadership, administrative & strong communication skills.

Proven experience with budget development and fiscal management.

Ability to handle several tasks simultaneously

Ability to perform essential functions of this position

Ability to possess a firearm

Ability to use all standard law enforcement equipment

Able to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as necessary

Clear and concise speech Driver's license

Eligibility for Wisconsin Law Enforcement Standards Board Certification

Good driving record

Good physical condition

Good verbal and written communication skills

Knowledge and skills in operating computer systems

No domestic abuse convictions

No felony convictions

Previous experience

React quickly and effectively to stressful situations

U.S. citizen

Vision correctable to 20/20


Education Requirements

High school diploma

Associate's degree

Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice or a closely related field; or equivalent combination of experience from an accredited college or university in addition to extensive law enforcement experience in police supervision, administration, or a related field is preferred. 

Related course work at the FBI National Academy, Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command, Executive Development Institute Program (State of Wisconsin program) or Leadership in Police Organizations (LPO) is preferred.

City of Markesan seeks Part-Time Deputy Clerk-Treasurer/Police Clerk

The City of Markesan in Green Lake County is looking to hire a part-time Deputy Clerk-Treasurer/Police Clerk. 


The position will consist of approximately 25-30 hours per week with hours split between the Deputy Clerk-Treasurer roll and Police Clerk. 


The Deputy Clerk-Treasurer will work under the supervision of the City Clerk-Treasurer. This position performs a variety of responsibilities including but not limited to: assistance in elections, licensing and permits, accounting and clerical functions in accordance with the State Statutes and City Ordinances. 


The Police Clerk will work under the supervision of the Chief of Police and will perform a variety of responsibilities including, but not limited to: maintenance of department records, monthly filing of Uniformed Crime Reports, answering the telephone and assisting the general public.


Qualifications: 

• High school diploma or equivalent; an associate's degree or equivalent experience

• Experience in accounting, bookkeeping, or office management

• Strong computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word and Excel)

• Excellent customer service and communication skills

• Strong organizational, multitasking, and attention-to-detail abilities

• High degree of integrity and ability to handle confidential information with discretion

Crossing Guards Needed!!!!!


The City of Markesan is in need of one regular and several substitute Crossing Guards for the 2025-2026 school year.


A regular guard will work from approximately 7:30am to 8:10am and 2:50pm to 3:20pm each day school is in session (except early release days). A substitute guard will fill scheduling gaps on an "on-call" basis when a regular guard is unavailable for a shift.
