Parking Citations

If you received a Parking Citation: 

To PAY your citation:

• Pay online at: https://www.markesanwi.gov/online-services *service fee applies* Follow instructions on web form.

• Pay by mail with Check or Money Order only. Mailing address is found below (Include your citation number on your payment). NO CASH IN THE MAIL PLEASE.  Mail to:  PO Box 352, Markesan, WI 53946

• Pay in person with Cash, Check, Money Order or Credit Card at Markesan City Hall located at 150 S. Bridge Street, Mon-Fri 8:00AM - 4:00PM

• Pay with Check or Money Order using the after-hours drop box located on the exterior of the City Hall (left side of main door). Include your citation number on your payment. DO NOT LEAVE CASH WHEN PAYING WITH THE DROP BOX. 

To CONTEST or INITIATE A REVIEW of a citation: 

• Request to Have Your Parking Citation Reviewed
  If you think your citation was issued in error, please follow the instructions below. Parking citations will only be dismissed if the Chief of Police determines that the citation was issued in error. If your vehicle was illegally parked, your request will be denied. Before you fill out a Parking Citation Review Form, please review Reasons My Parking Citation will NOT be Dismissed.
  
  Examples of possible errors:

o Vehicles exempted by state statute.

o Vehicles that are illegally parked due to a documented medical emergency.

o Incorrect licenses plate number.

• Fill out the Parking Citation Review Form within 10 days after the parking citation was issued including an explanation why the citation was issued in error. 
  
  Citations are reviewed by the Chief of Police. If it is determined an error was made in issuing a citation, late fees will be waived. If the Review is denied, you are obligated to pay the fine and late fees that have accrued. Submitting a request does not stop late fees from accruing. Fees are added beginning 14 days after a citation is issued. If your vehicle was illegally parked, your request will be denied. If it is determined an error was made in issuing a citation, any late fees will be waived. 

• Request a Court Date to contest a Parking Citation
  Within 30 days of the citation date, you may appeal the citation by requesting a court hearing via the Chief of Police. If a hearing is requested, the original parking citation will be voided and you will be issued a Traffic Citation payable to the State of Wisconsin. You will be responsible for the $20 base fine, including an additional Municipal Court cost of $38. The court date/time will be on the newly issued citation. 

You MAY NOT Contest a Parking Citation if:

o You have received a Notice of Collection, State Debt Collection, or Tax Refund Intercept Collection.

o You have been notified by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation that your vehicle registration has been suspended.

o Even though you may dispute a parking citation, there are many reasons why a parking ticket will not be dismissed. Please review Reasons My Parking Citation will NOT be Dismissed.

Parking Fee Schedule

Illegal Parking: $20 if paid within 14 days



$25 Late Fee – if paid 15-28 days after citation was issued

Additional $25 Penalty – after 29 days

If payment is not received after 45 days, the City will forward outstanding balances to participating collection agencies, the State Debt Collection and Tax Refund Intercept Programs. An additional administrative fee of $10 will apply.

After 45 days, any unpaid parking citations will be submitted to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and your vehicle registration may be suspended until the matter is resolved.
